The production team studied the actual work being carried out on the shop floor.
The time required for different activities was measured. Delays, unnecessary movement, waiting time and inefficient work sequences were identified.
The production process was then reorganised.
Some activities were rearranged, some unnecessary steps were removed and available resources were better balanced.
The result was an approximately 50% improvement in production efficiency.
The important lesson was that a large improvement did not always require a large investment.
